Social Networks vs Television

About hundred years ago no one heard of television and the invention of the TV set was a real blessing for the majority of people. They considered it a miracle and got so addicted to it that they thought Television was the only thing they would need in their lives. And now, tell me please, who has the same opinion? Sure you are right, only those who have little knowledge and notion about the Internet. This giant has swallowed Television like a child swallows some candy (a very typical analogy).

Millions of people worldwide prefer to spend their time chatting in a certain Social Network (or in several ones simultaneously) rather than to sit beside the TV set and watch a cartoon or a film or a program (sounds disappointing for those who invented Television). However this is a fact, it is our reality and no one can deny it. The question almost everyone is concerned with runs as follows – Why is it so?

The influence of television is dying. So we have to define the reasons and prerequisites of such enormous success that the Internet in general and Social Networks in particular possess. Let us consider Twitter.

The latter has approximately 190 users posting about 65 million tweets per day (these numbers are shocking). Among those users are so popular and important people of today as Barack Obama, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Christiano Ronaldo and other celebrities to name just a few of them.

I don’t think that all the above mentioned celebrities watch television more than an hour per day. But I am more than sure that they spend at least 6 – 7 hours in front of their computers typing something on their keyboards. The difference is perceivable.

So what have Social networks offered to people that they betrayed television so easily? The answer is INFORMATION and the opportunity of FREE COMMUNICATION. You can say that the aim of television is to give information and I’ll answer that the same information you can get from Social Networks even faster. You don’t have to wait for the news program to learn what is going on in the world.

Simply type this sentence on Twitter and your followers will give the answer in no time. People have become so mad about Twitter that they even buy twitter followers to gain wider audience (they won’t sacrifice their money for the sake of television).

Maybe in about 20 years we shall speak of Social Networks like we are talking now about television. No one can predict it, but I have a strong conviction that something will come to replace Internet. Let us wait and see what it will be.
