Answering the Age Old Question: How to Become a Search Addict
Hi, my name is Kaila and I’m a searchaholic. That’s right; I’m addicted to all things search: SEO, SEM, link building, etc – As is the case with many addicts, we find something we just can’t stop doing and we make the most of it (albeit in a way that may just ruin lives). I’m lucky though: my addiction doesn’t harm my health, and it pays my wages in a legit career that I love. As a search engine marketer you too can become an addict in a few easy steps.
Step 1: Make It A Habit
They say, a habit can be stuck to if followed and repeated for three to four weeks. So try it out. Get your feet wet with SEO. Learn and implement the SEO basics for your website. Understand how search engines work, and reverse engineer the process to give you new ideas/techniques. Constantly play around on search engines. Try out a few interesting search commands to help you scour the web for link building opportunities, content marketing ideas, or competitive research.
Step 2: Find a Reliable Dealer
There are quite a few search engines out there: Google, Bing, and Yahoo are just the key players. Find a search site that will give you what you need on a regular basis, and in a reliable manner. Nothing worse than trying to become a search addict and not being able to use it regularly! Don’t forget about niche search sites too. Know where to go to scratch your search itch.
Step 3: Make It Fun
You might roll your eyes at that, but really: making whatever you’re addicted to fun always makes it that much more enjoyable. In my case, I love Twitter in addition to search. So I try to use Twitter as much as possible when searching online. Whether I’m looking for an answer to a question, looking for link building resources, or just trying to get inspiration for a blog post, I turn to Twitter. I also like to chat online. I know: sooooo 1997. Since I like to chat and be social online I try to integrate this activity into my addiction.
An example of something we’ve done in our office, just for funzies, is using the SEOMoz Keyword Difficulty Tool to figure out what keywords are the most difficult to rank for in search engines. You’d be surprised how many keywords, while very difficult, don’t score over 90% difficulty! Some interesting ones: click here-97%, shop-89%, iPhone-81%, United States-92%, and Google-86%. Just one example of making your addiction fun.
Step 4: Google EVERYTHING
It may sound obvious, but use a search engine for everything you do. My preferred search engine, of course, is Google. It’s sad, but anytime someone has a question whether I’m at a party, sitting at work, or just at home, they’ll turn to me. Why? Because they know about my addiction, and they know I’ll find the answer (well, and because some of my friends are a little lazy too).
I go to Google for everything, and everyone around me knows that. Self diagnose that pain in my eye, research a new car, look for a local restaurant, or do a bit of background checking on a new boyfriend: there are many uses for Google!
Step 5: Score Some Loot for Being a BadASS Searcher
If you didn’t know already, there are contests out there for just about everything. A few of the contests I’ve entered myself in revolve around guest blogging. In fact, I just won $125 recently for placing 8th in the Bad Ass SEO Contest put on by @The_Gman. Use your searching skills to win some cashola, and BAM: you’re an addict.
Step 6: Feed Your Need 24/7
Get your fix for search all the time with an awesome search ready phone: an Android. This phone was built for search, and you probably aren’t a true addict without one! I suppose, even having a regular phone with mobile access will do. But to get the full experience buy one of these bad boys and have at it – 24/7!
There are probably a few more “steps” involved in the process of becoming an SEO addict. Feel free to add to the list in the comments below.
