We do lots of SEO campaigns and have noticed an increasing trend of companies following their competitors’ keywords. Businesses might assume that following competitor’s keywords must pertain to their own business since they are in fact, similar businesses. While that might be the way, chances are that they your competitors are just following their competitors’ keywords. The loop continues. Breaking apart from the masses is best way to get noticed online. Since we are talking about what the best keywords are to use for your business, let’s first find out what the competition is doing right with their keywords. Why Your Competition Is Doing SEO Right Going after a competitor’s keywords is a good way to end up number 2 or 3 on search engines. Some of you business owners might think #2 would be great from the position you currently reside in. The competition has been running after those keywords for some time now.
Remember the last training or conference you attended? My guess is you walked away from that event feeling absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of information you heard that day, or days. There have been a number of studies that show the majority of training attendees retain only 10% of the information, next time you are trying to decide the value of a training seminar ask if the price is worth 10% of the information promised. I mean, if that is the majority rule then it makes sense to use that as a value factor. But I digress. The point to focus on is that the current paradigm of training in the industry of Search Engine Optimization and Marketing is to inundate the attendees with information and we all walk away feeling we got value. I want to challenge that mindset and ask; wouldn’t it be more valuable to be given less information and have the time and opportunity to put it into action. Let it ALL sink in, not just 10%. Food for thought: 70% of America’s economy is fueled by small and micro businesses … 60% of those do not even have a website. Here is where it gets [...]

Whether you’re new to search engine optimization, or a seasoned pro, there are several key items one must remember when optimizing onsite content, link building, promoting on social media sites, and during content marketing as well. It seems that on a daily basis many of us are inundated with examples of SEO no-no’s, some of which are done by those either new to the industry or are just uneducated. Anything Hidden It never ceases to amaze me how many website owners utilize tactics such as hidden heading tags, hidden links, and hidden text. Never, and I mean never, is it okay to hide these critical items on a website. Search engines can see them, and they know they aren’t user friendly — how could they be? They’re hidden! Make sure to have every link visible, every heading visible, and this includes the color of the text as well. Think you should hide a link by making the text of the link the same color as the surrounding text, or 2 pixels? Think again. This isn’t a wise tactic. Duplicate Pages Even though there is a lot of talk about the lack of control Google has over duplicate content, it doesn’t [...]

Scott Willoughby from SEOmoz gave a great presentation at Infusioncon 2010 (Infusionsoft Conference in Scottsdale AZ). Here are some interesting “bits”. (some you may already know) SEOmoz has a new version of their Firefox toolbar, coming soon. For seeing page metrics Statistic: There are 100 billion searches per month. And of course that number is growing each month. [Darrell note: we're so used to hearing about search traffic growing, that no one really thinks about it. But while most other "bricks and mortar" businesses have been kicked by a slowdown in traffic, the internet just gets more and more traffic. The internet is not in recession!] 70% of searches are long tail (5 or less searches per month). The more you get into the “tail”, the better conversions you get Research has shown that 3 and 4 word phrases convert especially well. Use Google’s Adwords too to look at search volume for keywords. Tip: use exact match. Otherwise the volume is way off Use internal site search. Great information on what your audience is looking for, and what keywords are valuable. He also broke down on-page elements, by importance: High value: Title Root domain Body text (without keyword stuffing) Moderate value: [...]

This may be one of the most overlooked pieces of the blog, however it is one of the most important pieces in order to effectively get your idea across. If you improperly punctuate a blog this could cause confusion, as well as cause readers to question your credibility. Along with spelling, correctly educating yourself on the usage of the comma, exclamation mark, semicolon could make or break you. Probably the most misused punctuation mark is the comma. Many writers feel the need to insert a comma wherever there is a pause; this is a very common and grave mistake to make. There are 3 main uses of the comma: introductory, list, and as an explanatory. The exclamation mark is one to be used sparingly. If you decide to use it, be aware that this is one mark that is to be used with caution as it is a juvenile mark to use; this should not deter you from using it, however, you should do it intentionally. The semicolon is perhaps one of the most misunderstood marks in all of punctuation. As a result, many writers shy away from using it. However, if you decide to venture out and use it, [...]
