More and more businesses are realizing that SEO is useful, and not just a high priced way to 1up the competition. Having that knowledge is great but knowing what to spend on SEO or who to spend it with, can be a daunting task. Let’s take a look at the many faces of SEO.
The SEO Link Generator
These companies sell links, backlinks and more links – and they are usually good at what they do. If they are good at building them, they are also good at charging for them. Look for a fair payment to be in the $50 – $100 for each link range when hand submitted. Other versions will bundle the links for you by mostly generating links with some software for $299 or a similar price.
If you didn’t know – backlinks are king (for now). I had 3 people ask me “What is the #1 most important thing in SEO?” They all said, “Backlinks, right?”

The First Page PPC Listing
They might say things like, “Will you look at that? I told you I could get on the first page. Actually I guaranteed I could get you on the first page of Google!”
Look for the listing on the top or right of the search engine page – in the Sponsored area. While they did get you listed on Google, and on the first page, it was because you are paying a monthly fee in which they are adding into a Google Adwords account. They usually take a cut out of your monthly deposit up to 50 percent for their services.
The Big Analytics Company
They usually start you off with a demonstration and explain the benefits, then email you with a “each keyword search price” of a dinner for 4. Their software usually has all the cool buttons and offers you statistics in a visiual format.
The SEO – Blogger, Web Designer, Hacker, Programmer, Cartoonist, Drywall Installer, Beer Brewer – Freelancer
There’s some sort of connect with what’s going on and this might be a good fit for a small business that’s looking to get listed and maintain a budget.
The ebook SEO Guru
“Buy this ebook for $29 and you get a free Twitter Tips ebook. You will love it.” Yea, you might. These tips can be helpful if you don’t know too much about SEO and are looking to find easy steps to get your SEO going. There are some “real” SEO expert ebook out there, but they could be too advanced for you too. Just search around to see which one you think might benefit your needs.

I think its funny getting calls from specific call centers offering these services. I got a call from a company swearing they could get me #1 in 1 hour and it wasnt ppc. I told them they were a scam.

Very interesting way to classify the many aspects of SEO. I think you are pretty close with your assessment, but SEO in one way or another has to be used for websites. As this comes more common familiar, people will already be interested in what we are doing as far as SEO services and will know more about the industry themselves.
Thanks for a great post.
I thought it was a fun post and thinking about elaborating on it in the future.
